How I Got Into Tech: Megan Legge, Product Manager

Written by Erika Cote | Jan 11, 2023

On our careers site, we encourage candidates to tell imposter syndrome to take the day off — in other words, don't let a confidence gap, or a lack of a traditional tech resume, get in the way of applying to HubSpot.

One of the best ways to reinforce this idea is to tell the stories of how current HubSpotters got into tech, especially if it was through an unexpected or nontraditional path.

Here, Product Manager, Megan Legge shares her story. (Full transcript below.)

Hi, I'm Megan Legge. I'm a Product Manager here at HubSpot. I graduated college with a business degree and for the next 10 years, held various back office positions from working in an accounting office to bookkeeping for small businesses. Then there were several years mixed in where my job was being a stay-at-home mom, raising two kids while my spouse served in the military.

There wasn't much passion in those out-of-the-house jobs, I was just there for a paycheck and I was worried about the perception of those missing years on a resume. But getting into tech was something I did when I decided to prioritize myself and my career fulfillment when I made that decision I took inventory of all the core skills I used over the years and put them at center stage. My growth mindset, work ethic, and strength in communication and collaboration. I showcased who I was as a person and what I could bring to the table regardless of industry.

For those looking to get into tech from a non-traditional background, first think about the unique advantage that gives you. Keep an open mind about how you might get your foot in the door. Think about your long-term goals, and be ready to adapt to move toward them. Be prepared to work hard, and willing to learn. I went out of my comfort zone and made a bet that the tech world was a place where I could thrive and grow, and it's paid off. You can do the same.
